COLLECTION AND ORGANIZATION

SCOPE OF THE COLLECTION

The library collection is broad in scope covering adequately the fields of Law, Business, Public Administration, Government, Health Services and Information Technology. It is designed not only to support the teaching and research needs of its numerous users, but also functions as a resource center to establish institutional affiliates, and in a limited way to the other scholars, professionals and practitioners if only to keep them abreast of new developments and insights in their specific fields within the context of Ateneo Professional Schools’ Program. The outstanding features of the collection lie in the strength of its books, periodical holdings, non-print materials and on-line databases, both current and retrospective.  The library has an excellent reference collection, historical books, as well as Philippine jurisprudence. The total collection consists of 60,000 volumes of books and bound journals and about 200 titles of current periodicals and serials. The multi-volume Philippine Reports and the Ateneo Graduate Schools of Business Theses are available in both hardcopies and in microfiche forms.

In addition, numerous titles or Compact Disk Read Only Memory (CD-ROMs) and videos are available in the Audio Visual Room and Electronic Resources Room.

In-house and commercial indexes cover business and law related topics that serve as handy reference tools for researchers.

Video holdings both in business and law are rich in entrepreneurial topics and reference and trial practice techniques. Reference Librarians are always available to give assistance and for consultation on possible viewing arrangements.

ARRANGEMENT OF THE COLLECTION

The library operates in an open stack set up. Materials may be used near the stacks or brought to the reading area. Users are requested to keep materials in order. Instead of reshelving, materials should be left on book trucks or tables.

CLASSIFICATION OF THE COLLECTION

The library adapts two major systems of classifying book collections: first is the Library of Congress (LC) classification system. This system is applied to the Business and Information Technology holdings; second is the Los Angeles County Law Library Classification (LACLLC) scheme, which applies to the law holdings.  Business and law journals are not classified as such but simply arranged alphabetically by title. The “The”  code is the general classification use for both business and law theses.
